Summer Shopping at Liberty’s

No visit to London-town would be complete without visiting one of London’s greatest shops, Liberty, one of the capitals oldest department stores. Situated in a Tudor building since 1875, this iconic store has a magical atmosphere that sweeps you up the minute you enter. This summer, their collection is as beautiful and inspiring as always.

Cream of the crop – Friday Flowers

I hope you would forgive me today, as I feel slightly smug showing off my beautiful garden roses. Freshly picked from my garden, ‘The Generous Gardener’ (Ausdrawn) is a Rose by David Austin. These flowers are from a climber plant and they bloom so generously from early in the season. The flowers are exquisite and of the old fashioned rose types and with a strong musky scent, so rare in new roses today.

'The Generous Gardener' (Ausdrawn) Roses

‘The Generous Gardener’ (Ausdrawn) Roses

This rose climber grows against my unsightly garage wall. A rather bland brick wall my french doors look out over. However, within the first year of planting two of these rose plants, they already bloomed enough for me to picked generously from, we were so surprised with their rapid growth. Within two years they covered the boring garage wall and now we are left with a show of beautiful roses in abundance. I will also let you know that I am no rose expert, but after having had great success with two other David Austin rose plants in my garden, I recently got a fourth type that I planted at my front door, I will let you know how that one is getting on. I just believe that the David Austin roses are the best and it is so worth investing in them and the varieties they have are incredible.

A Colourful Explosion

Show-stopping patterns and vibrant colours are the main ingredients of the latest fabric and wallpaper collection form Scion. This new range make it so easy to create a statement with oversize florals or geometrics on walls or giant zig-zag patterns for curtains. If this is your first dip into colour, then start with the gorgeous colour-blending stripes, keep your neutrals as your safety-net but branch out with bold colour injections here and there in the form of cushions, a wallpapered focal wall or a brightly upholstered armchair. Perfect for summer, these uplifting colours combined with funky patterns could be just the colour injection your home needs. My favourite has to be the turquoise zig-zag walls and Ikat design cushions with hints of lime and cobalt.

Set for tea time – Friday Flowers

The beauty of flowers is that they look pretty in just about any vessel. Here I used my espresso cups as vases to hold little flowers for a small tea party gathering I hosted at home. Nothing fancy I can assure you, however my little blooms in the small cups, did steal the show.

Espresso cups with Viburnum, Muscari and Forget-me-nots

Espresso cups with Viburnum, Muscari and Forget-me-nots

I hope this easy idea inspire you to create something similar, using what you have at home and very few flowers indeed. The espresso cups are from a very old Cath Kidston range, probably classified as “vintage Cath Kidston” by now. The lovely pale blue plates is part of a range called Asiatic Pheasants by Burleigh, a reproduction form the original antique range with the same name. The pretty embroidered napkins in pale blue and mint and also a vintage charity shop find and the soften the look.

Neon Living Colour

Neon is certainly alive and revived from the 80’s. I was lucky enough to live though the 80’s and experience neon the first time around, but luckily nowadays neon is much more stylish and useable. The key to incorporating neon into your life, whether it is into your home or wardrobe, is to do it in small doses. Use your chosen neon colour as an accent to make your interior pop. Also look out for ‘faded’ neons, they look great too and are much more subtle yet still funky and on-trend enough to rock this look. Buy into this trend while it is still summer, and those readers in the Southern Hemisphere – get your neon pieces now to lead this trend and brighten up your winter homes.

Here are a few favourite buys to inject some Living Colour Style into your life:

Ayres table & chairs, Habitat

Ayres table & chairs, Habitat

FADED NEON. A gorgeous simple and modern design, this table and chairs, made from bent plywood has a gentle colour wash in yellow, allowing the grain of the wood to still show through. I love the simplicity and almost toy-like design of the furniture.  Ayres table, £300, chairs, £120 each, Habitat (PS: on sale now – link though to see sale price, be quick!)

‘La Cerise sur le Gateau’ Eiffel Tower with Dots Cushion Cover Pink & ‘La Cerise sur Le Gateau’ Clogs and Dots Cushion Cover Yellow, Fred & Pickles.

FUN FACTOR. If you are also a fan of ‘the white bedding brigade’, then step outside your comfort zone and spice up your bedding with a set of new pillowcases (you don’t have to commit to a whole new neon duvet set!). Or liven up the sofa or armchair with a hot pink spotty cushion. I guarantee you will smile every time you see them.  ‘La Cerise sur le Gateau’ Eiffel Tower with Dots Cushion Cover Pink & ‘La Cerise sur Le Gateau’ Clogs and Dots Cushion Cover Yellow, £32 each, Fred & Pickles.

Green Shoots Pantone Coffee Maker, Berry Red

Green Shoots Pantone Coffee Maker, Amazon

CLASSIC NEON. An old classic gets a mini makeover with a bold neon transformation. And if you were ever in any doubt, the fact that the colour is by Pantone, should give it enough credibility to convince even the biggest colour critic.  Whitbread & Wilkinson Pantone Coffee Maker Green Shoots, £19.98, Amazon.

Block Neon Drip Vase in Pink, Red Candy

Block Neon Drip Vase in Pink, Red Candy

DRIP DELUX. Subtle enough not to scare away your partner but uber trendy combining the ‘drip-trend’ and neon in one super cool vase. The perfect accessory with or without a flower.  Block neon Drip Vase in Pink, £21, Red Candy

I just fell in love with the vintage decanter style that is funked up with the bright Chartreuse body. Chartreuse Victorian Decanter Lamp, £180, Little Mill House  (PS: They have a sale on, so be quick before I snap them all up)

Ombré Daisies

I received the sweetest gift a little while back form a dear friend and her husband, they came around for a bbq and presented me with this fabulous purple daisy plant. Apparently, it was all the husband’s idea and he picked the flowering plant too, I was very impressed with him. The purple and white daisies, Cineraria (Senecio hybridus), certainly cheered up a dull area in my front garden and with the ultra violet colour it’s  impossible to miss. With their ombré shading, purple fading into white, these daisies are making a huge comeback. Get yours now!

I liked picking them too and putting them in small bud vases throughout my house, these fit particularly well into my living room.

Just look at this lovely, harmonious collection of wallpapers by Vanessa Arbuthnott. Last week I showed you her new Scandinavian Wovens fabric collection, both these ranges are designed to compliment each other and also existing lines. Because of Vanessa’s simple and fresh designs for her wallpaper, it is clear to see how they can work together so effortlessly in contemporary and classic settings. The colour palette is just divine and covers 5 different designs, my favourites shown below, in fabulous colours from cornflower blue, raspberry, saffron, clay, mushroom, teal and charcoal. I also love the photography and gorgeous styling of these rooms.

Ice Cream Bouquet – Friday Flowers

This is what a call a statement vase, the kind of thing that makes you look twice, putting a smile on your face. You can have scoops of fun with these guys! These quirky hand-holding cone vases, aptly named ‘I-Scream Vase’ are by American interiors guru, Jonathan Adler, whose designs always allows for a bit of fun. I came across them earlier in the year and thought I’ll show you in the summer, but these vases have proved so popular that they are no longer available. (PS, you might still find them from here). I thought it might be a nice post to tell you that while you are reading this, I’m probably eating a real ice cream while sunning myself by the sea on my annual summer break. theoda xoxo

Vanessa Arbuthnott, new fabrics, Scandinavian Wovens

Stripes have always been hugely popular, from the plain and simple nautical navy and white combo, to the bright colours of a candy stripe. I think most of us sees a stripe as a classic choice that you can vamp up depending on your colour bravado, the style of the stripe or how you use your stripe. It is a pattern that most of us are comfortable with, no matter how reserved you are in your interior (or fashion) choices.

The latest collection of fabrics from Vanessa Arbuthnott, called Scandinavian Weaves, is a new journey for her as her previous designs usually are printed fabrics with coordinating plains. These new woven stripes with a reverse as pretty as the front, ideal for unlined curtains or blinds, and will make great upholstery too. As they are all made from ethically produced fibres and 100% echo friendly flax, they have a lovely tactile quality about them. Their colours are also designed to complement some of the existing ranges and of course they sit very well with the new ‘Wallpaper and Wallcoverings’ collection (being featured here on Livingcolourstyle.com soon, watch this space).
