Stylish Ceramics by Vipp

When I see or hear ‘Vipp‘, I think of the classic utilitarian pedal bins that many a stylish kitchen sports. But just look at this range of beautiful yet simple ceramics that they now also do, a collaboration with a Danish ceramicist, Annemette Kissow. This collection of ceramics is just part of a vast range of beautifully designed items for the home, spanning from full kitchen furniture, bathroom accessories, tableware and many more. I love how they have used the bowls, jugs and glasses as vessels to hold flowers, displaying them on a mirror to make a very powerful table centre.

Magnolias in bloom – Friday Flowers

The very exotic Magnolia flower teases all flower lovers around this time of year. Just like a lady with class, she only let us glimpse her beauty for a very short time. Count yourself lucky if your get to enjoy her beautiful blooms for more than a week or two at a time. Although the grand, big, oversize white ‘Magnolia Grandiflora‘ is spectacular in its own way, I like the delicacy of the smaller Magnolia X ‘Serene’ with the saucer shaped leaves in white and blush pink. I like how the tree carries its flowers before the leaves emerge, making sure that nothing distracts from their beauty. No wonder that certain species of magnolia is said be dating back to ancient times, confirming that beauty is indeed timeless.

These beautiful branches I have picked, with permission, from my neighbours garden. Three stems was enough to make a show in these vintage Wedgwood of Etruria & Barlaston England vases. These vases are part of a small collection I have collected over time. I think they are such classic pieces suited to many flowers, but today they are more than worthy of the elegant Magnolia.

I’m going Freelance!

Last week was a quite a big week for me. My business cards and postcards arrived through the post even earlier than I expected. I was so excited but my heart was also filled with a feeling of dread and doubt, I was thinking, ‘no turning back now’. There is something official about seeing your name printed in black and white. I have always been very fortunate to have had a steady job, and the last 9 years I have been very happy doing what I love for a top UK glossy magazine. But now is the time to spread my wings, broaden my horizon and chase after the adventures that a world of Freelance could offer me. I know it will be a huge learning curve, but I think I’m ready for it, and if nothing else, it will give me more time with my family.

Here are my business cards and postcards. My good friend and colleague, Mr Glen (also knows as Glen Wilkins), designed them together with my website. I had them printed by Moo.com, a service that I was so impressed with. In fact, I want to order some more, just for the fun of it and I think I will get ones done for LivingColourStyle.com too.

Easy Easter Flowers – Friday Flowers

Easter is my favourite holiday because it is bright, colourful, sometimes sunny and it includes chocolate, lots of chocolate. It has always been a time for easy get-togethers, a BBQ, a picnic or a pub lunch in the sun. For us it definitely includes long dog walks, ending up with sampling a local cider along the way.  This weekend I’m having friends around for a “braai” (Afrikaans for BBQ) and to pretty up the house, I made this cute flower display.

During this time of year my numerous cake stands comes to use, very frequently. This gorgeous white Sophie Conran cake stand, doubles up as a platform for my flowers and Easter eggs. I have used egg cups, also form Sophie Conran, as mini vases to hold my little blooms. Add a few foil wrapped eggs for an Easter feel. I will use this Easter display as a table centre, but I think it will look just as pretty as a ‘welcome’ in the hall.

The flowers I have used are; purple-blue muscari, vibrant lime viburnum, violet anemones and sky blue forget-me-nots. The cute egg cups with the stripes and birdie motive is from What A Lovely Shop. A colourful feast for the eyes, Happy Easter, everyone!

Summer elegance Scandi style, Broste Copenhagen

Make the most of the upcoming summer and those long summers evenings, just like the Scandinavians do, and create a fabulous outdoor living space. Dress it with gorgeous items like lanterns, floor fusions, chunky knit pouffes and tableware ready to entertain. I love this new colour palette from Broste Copenhagen, primary colours that have a faded look to them, red turning into raspberry, blue shading into aqua and yellow fading into dark creams.

Green Vintage Glass – Friday Flowers

So I have to come clean, it’s always best to be honest and confess. I have a mild obsession with glassware, and as my friends will tell you, also the colour green. And although I absolutely love all colours, each holding something special for me, my absolute favourite has to be green. All shades of green, lime, moss, mint, sage, emerald, bottle-green, chartreuse – I adore them all.

So it was inevitable that I end up with a selection of vintage green stemmed glasses. Very few of them matching or in pairs, but to me that only adds to their charm.

Picking the last of the Spring blossoms was a joyful task, although also slightly sad, as I realised it will be another whole year before I can enjoy picking them again.

All to soon the table centre display was finished. The selection of odd vintage glasses, filled with white blossoms and  presented on a green glass tray, looked lovely on my dining table.

This whole look took me about 10 minutes to do, including picking flowers, cleaning and filling the glasses and then arranging them. If you want to recreate this, of course any other stemware glasses will look great too, play with different heights to add interest and keep your flower selection simple.

Jo Malone & Michael Angove launch home scents range

A few months ago I was honoured to be invited to an afternoon of high tea where the most fabulous collection was reveled. Jo Malone and Michael Angove have teamed up to create a home fragrance range to die for. A rage that is quintessentially English, incorporating true British elements, dear to both brands. There are two scents, Orange Blossom, reminding of Victorian green houses and orangeries and Blackberry & Bay, fresh, young and wild. Both as striking as their specially designed look.

At the show I got to see some of Michael Angove’s illustrations first hand and also the objects that inspired him on this journey to create these two bespoke designs. The detail of his drawings are incredible. Look out on the Jo Malone packaging for hidden bugs, an insider tip by the man himself.

Then of course, the tea time treats was delicious, sorry, I finished my plate before I took the photo, oops!

Daffodils – Friday Flowers

To me daffodils are like ‘sunshine on a stem’. They are the yellow beacons I search out in those dull early mornings running for the station. And as the seasons change from winter to spring, my mom back in South Africa always asks, “are the daffodils out yet?” A kind of measure as to say, “don’t worry spring is around the corner”. So on my way to-and-from the station, I pass so many bright daffs, so I thought, let me see how many different ones I can spot on my route. So here they are, a line-up on my wall.

Don’t worry, no daffodils were hurt during the photography of this set, they all made it into a pretty vase at the end of the day.
